Scott Crane of Lostine is launching a green casket business that he hopes will bring 20-40 jobs in Wallowa County in the next two years.

Wallowa Mountain Casket Co. will cater to the growing market for green burials in Oregon and the rest of the country.

“In the industry they prefer the term ‘sustainable’ to ‘green’,” Crane said about a growing movement toward burials that forego embalming and often an expensive casket.

A green, natural or sustainable burial is one in which there is no embalming, no vault (to enclose the casket) and a casket without metal, so that it can decompose naturally.
